PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2025: How to Claim Up to ₹78,000 Subsidy on Your Rooftop Solar
A step-by-step guide to India's biggest rooftop solar subsidy scheme — who qualifies, how much you get, and how ESSRCPS handles all the paperwork for you.
The Government of India’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the most ambitious rooftop solar subsidy programme ever launched in India. With a budget of ₹75,000 crore and a target of 1 crore rooftop installations by 2027, this scheme can make solar genuinely free for millions of households.
At ESSRCPS, we have guided hundreds of families and businesses through the application process. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What is PM Surya Ghar?
Launched in February 2024, the scheme provides direct benefit transfer (DBT) subsidies to residential consumers who install rooftop solar systems through empanelled vendors. The electricity generated goes first to your home; surplus is exported to the grid for net metering credits.
Subsidy Structure
| System Size | Central Subsidy |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 kW | 60% of benchmark cost |
| 2 kW – 3 kW | 40% of benchmark cost for the additional 1 kW |
| Above 3 kW | No additional central subsidy (state schemes may apply) |
In practical terms, a typical 3 kW residential system benefits from a central subsidy of approximately ₹78,000. Many states stack additional incentives on top of this.
Who Qualifies?
- Residential consumers connected to state DISCOMs
- Electricity connection in your name (or co-applicant)
- Structurally suitable rooftop (no permanent shading, adequate area)
- DISCOM technical feasibility approval
Commercial and industrial consumers are not eligible for PM Surya Ghar central subsidy, though separate MNRE and state schemes exist for them.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1 — Register on the National Portal
Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in and register with your electricity consumer number and district. You receive a unique application ID.
Step 2 — DISCOM Technical Feasibility Check
Your local DISCOM inspects the site (within 30 days by mandate) and confirms whether net metering can be extended to your connection.
Step 3 — Choose an Empanelled Vendor
Only MNRE-empanelled vendors like ESSRCPS can execute PM Surya Ghar installations. We are registered across Delhi, Rajasthan, and 10+ other states.
Step 4 — Installation & Commissioning
Installation typically takes 1–3 days for residential systems. Our team handles mounting, wiring, inverter configuration, and grid connection.
Step 5 — Net Meter Application
We file the net metering application with your DISCOM on your behalf. This enables your meter to run backwards when you export surplus power.
Step 6 — Subsidy Disbursement
After installation is verified and net metering is active, the subsidy is credited directly to your bank account via DBT — typically within 30–60 days of commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply if my house is rented? No. The electricity connection must be in the applicant’s name.
Is there a deadline? The scheme runs until 2027. However, empanelled vendor lists and benchmark costs are updated periodically, so applying sooner is advisable.
What if my DISCOM rejects the feasibility? Rejections are rare. Common reasons include transformer capacity issues — we coordinate with your DISCOM to resolve these in most cases.
